Chapter Seven
ON TUESDAY morning, right at eight, I came in and put down my briefcase, and Tate handed me the cup of coffee David usually had ready for me. “Thank you,” I said, taking it from him. He was wearing the same dark slacks he’d worn on our date. Either they were his only pair, which I doubted, or he’d planned to wear them. I liked seeing them on him. And more than that, I surprised myself by liking having him in the office with me.
He nodded, then silently turned away from me. Before he could go, I reached out and grabbed his wrist, stopping him. “Are you okay?” I asked him.
He gave me a little half smile. “Yes. I’m going to be faithful to my Master. I’m sorry, Mr. Prier.” With that I let him go, and he quickly walked out of my office and straight to where Lee was sitting, apparently waiting for him to return.
I hung my head and stared at my coffee. I wanted to take back those last few seconds. To unhear what Tate had said so quietly, with such certainty, as if that was exactly what he wanted. And with him saying that, I knew I had to let him go and stop caring about him or what happened to him. There was nothing else to do.
I worked through the morning in a haze of disbelief and pain. No one bothered to come talk to me while I went through the expense spreadsheets, and so I hoped no one noticed that I wasn’t myself in the least. It was only at lunch, where we all routinely stopped whatever we were doing and got together, that I would have to force myself to be with the rest of them. I wasn’t looking forward to it in the least.
At eleven Tate knocked on my open office door. I looked up to find him standing there with a pen and a notepad in his hand. “I’m taking lunch orders for the Thai place down the street. What would you like?”
Him back in my condo and strapped to my bed as I kissed him before sliding inside of him. “Summer rolls and coconut chicken. Thank you.” I went back to the reports in front of me, dismissing him without another word as he continued on with his task.
The food arrived at fifteen minutes before noon, and I heard Lee reprimand Tate about his timing since we had lunch at noon. Even though his words were muffled by the glass, his tone wasn’t. I tried not to care. I forced myself not to go into Lee’s office and tell him that Tate had made a simple mistake, to lay off him, and that he didn’t deserve being berated for a fifteen-minute difference.
But how Lee chose to discipline his sub wasn’t my business. Within reason. Telling him how much he’d screwed up wasn’t being abusive. If he’d crossed that line, I would have had something to say. As it was I joined David in the conference room and began eating my lunch.
